Muromachi Gofukuro — One-of-a-Kind Bags Handmade in Kyoto from Upcycled Kimono Fabrics
Muromachi Gofukuro is a special collection of bags crafted in Kyoto using carefully selected vintage kimono fabrics. Each piece is handmade from start to finish — fabric sourcing, cutting, and sewing — by artisans in Kyoto who specialize in traditional Japanese textiles.
The outer materials are deadstock vintage kimono textiles from the 1970s to early 2000s, originally found in storehouses, ateliers, or old textile shops. These fabrics include classics such as Ōshima-tsumugi, Yūki-tsumugi, Kihachijō-tsumugi, and other kimono, obi, yukata, and haori textiles.
Each bag is completely one-of-a-kind, designed with respect for the original fabric’s beauty and history.

Why Customers Love Muromachi Gofukuro
- One-of-a-kind upcycled craftsmanship
No two bags are ever alike. Because each piece is cut from different areas of vintage kimono bolts, every bag has its own pattern placement, colors, and character.
-Unique designs filled with Japanese heritage
The textiles used carry decades of history and the spirit of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The bags showcase vibrant colors, bold motifs, and intricate weaving unique to kimono fabrics.
- Handmade in Kyoto
All bags are created in Kyoto — a city known for its long tradition of textile production, dyeing, and craftsmanship. Each step of the process is done carefully by skilled artisans who understand how to handle delicate kimono fabrics.
- Sustainable & zero-waste approach
The makers aim to minimize waste by using as much of the vintage fabric as possible. Fabric offcuts are reused when possible, and linings and handles are chosen individually to best match each piece. Handles are often made from strong, beautiful sanada-himo cords, adding both durability and traditional charm.
Perfect For
