We’re thrilled to share the very first original tenugui from Miss Matatabi - Shugei Neko - designed in-house and brought to life through the hands of skilled artisans in Enshu, Shizuoka. This tenugui is dyed using the Chusen method, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that allows for beautiful patterns to appear on both sides of the fabric. The cloth is a soft and textured tsumugi cotton, woven by the same Enshu craftspeople.
Rectangular and reversible, the tenugui is a versatile piece of Japanese daily life. It can be used in many ways — as a towel, scarf, head covering, or handkerchief. It also makes a beautiful decorative piece: hang it as wall art, or use it as a table runner. Many people enjoy sewing with tenugui to create bags, pouches, or cushion covers. It also works wonderfully as eco-conscious gift wrap or a modern furoshiki for carrying items. Thoughtfully designed and traditionally crafted, this tenugui makes a meaningful gift — or a special treat for yourself.

Comes in our original letterpress-printed box ready for gift-giving.
Please note: This tenugui is traditionally left unhemmed at the ends, as it is simply cut from a bolt of fabric. Over time, the edges may begin to fray slightly — this is a natural feature of Japanese tenugui. If needed, you can trim any loose threads with scissors. The fraying will settle with continued use. The fabric is machine washable and can be tumble dried. With every wash, the tenugui softens and develops a beautiful texture — one of the many joys of using it over time.
Chusen dyeing is specialized art form and requires a highly skilled artisan to perfect. Due to the hand-dyed nature of these fabrics there may be some irregularities, however these are not errors or misprints, rather a natural characteristic of Chusen dyed textiles.
