45% cotton, 55% ramie Shinno-suke Joufu dyed by Takashi Sekizawa
Takashi Sekizawa is a Japanese master dyer who breathes new life into traditional textile arts through his workshop, Some-Kobo Sekizawa. Embracing a deep commitment to meticulous handcraftsmanship, he specializes in Chusen—a classic Japanese hand-dyeing technique. By utilizing advanced methods such as Hosokawa-zome (a multi-layered dyeing process) and extracting rich colors from natural botanicals, Sekizawa pours his heart into every single piece. His fabrics are celebrated for their organic warmth, intricate color depth, and the soulful beauty that only true human touch can achieve.
Shinno-suke Joufu is a contemporary textile inspired by the tradition of Omi Joufu, a historic linen fabric from Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Woven from natural fibers such as ramie and cotton-linen blends, these fabrics are prized for their breathability, lightness, and beautiful texture.
A signature feature is the delicate shibo texture, which creates a cool, airy feel against the skin and becomes softer with use. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design, Shinno-suke Joufu offers a timeless expression of Japanese textile artistry.
Perfect for garments, scarves, and other sewing projects where texture and natural beauty can truly shine.
This fabric is part of our Shokunin Collection textile series.
Traditionally a Yukata (summer kimono) fabric, full bolts measure 38cm (14.9 inches) width x 12m length. Please be aware of the width before placing an order. A full bolt of 12m is enough to make a one Yukata. To make modern clothing, piece lengths together to make the width you need. The print on Chusen-dyed fabric can be seen on both sides so the fabric can be used on either side, and can be pieced together in various ways in order to create your desired pattern layout.
1/2 metre (50cm x 40cm, 19" x 15.74" wide)
Care instructions :
Hand wash or machine wash in a net on a delicate cycle. Wash separately. Washing in cold water is recommended. Dry in the shade, do not tumble dry.
Chusen dyeing is specialized art form and requires a highly skilled artisan to perfect. Due to the hand-dyed nature of these fabrics there may be some irregularities, however these are not errors or misprints, rather a natural characteristic of Chusen dyed textiles. These textiles have a pattern repeat at approximately 100cm, and the following repeat is a mirror image of the previous.
